MURRIETA, California – Police arrested a teenager suspected of driving under the influence early Sunday morning after she lost control of her vehicle in a deadly rollover crash and a 19-year-old passenger was ejected and killed, according to a report by the Riverside County coroner’s office.
Ashly Nicole Rodriguez, 19, was arrested just after the 3 a.m. fatal crash on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter after the crash on Borel Road just east of Buck Road in Murrieta. Rodriguez was booked at Southwest Detention Center, but released on $75,000 bail, according to police records.
Aaron Ellison was pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident. Police say the vehicle was traveling about 50 mph prior to veering off the road and rolling multiple times. Two other passengers suffered moderate injuries and were transported to the Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar, police said in a report.
California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“Drunk driving is reckless driving and it claims the lives of more than 10,000 people in the United States every year,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Indeed, here in California we lost 791 people in alcohol-related car accidents in 2010.”
The families of these victims will likely face profound sadness in the wake of this crash and tremendous grief in part because the driver was likely a friend of the victim. Although the driver may have made a mistake to drive under the influence, she may not be the only responsible party for the victim’s death.
A year ago, the California legislature amended its Social Host Liability Law or Civil Code Section 1714 to allow families of victims of drunk drivers to pursue litigation against any adult who knowingly furnishes alcoholic beverages at their home to a person under 21 years old.
“In other words, if these young people were drinking at the home of a parent or another adult who provided alcohol to them that adult can also be held liable for this young man’s death,” Seegmiller said.
