HESPERIA, California – Sergio Marin, 32, of Fontana died early New Year’s Day morning in a head-on car crash with another vehicle on Cottonwood Avenue, according to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner Department.

About 1:44 a.m., Marin was traveling in the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of Cottonwood Avenue when his 1994 Honda Civic collided head-on with a 1997 Acura carrying two adults and three juveniles, the coroner and the Press Enterprise reported. Marin died at the scene of the two-vehicle crash, but the five victims in the other vehicle were transported to different nearby hospitals with serious injuries, the Press Enterprise reported.

“New Year’s Eve night is one of the most dangerous times to be traveling,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “My condolences to the family of the man who died and prayers to those who survived that they fully recover from their injuries.”

Those who are injured in traffic accidents due to someone else’s negligence may recover compensation for their medical costs, lost wages and other financial losses in a personal injury lawsuit against the driver’s insurance carrier. Studies have shown that victims who are represented by an attorney typically recover roughly 3.5 times more in compensation than those who work directly with an insurance adjuster, Seegmiller said.

Witnesses to the New Year’s Day car accident are asked to contact Deputy Kevin McCurdy at 760-947-1500.

Three Fatal Bicycle Accidents in Orange County Over Weekend

Monday, September 17th, 2012

ORANGE COUNTY, California – Three bicyclists were killed over the weekend in separate Orange County crashes – two in Newport Beach and one in Buena Park – marking an especially deadly weekend for cyclists, according to a press release by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department.

These fatalities bring the total number of bicyclists killed in Orange County this year to nine deaths, triple the number of bicycle fatalities reported in the county for 2010, according to the most recent statistics compiled by the California Highway Patrol Statewide Integrated Traffic Report and data reported on bikinginla.com.

“The staggering number of fatal bicycle accidents in Orange County so far this year is unacceptable,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, a wrongful death legal specialist. “Motorists are required to share the road with bicyclists and pedestrians, but often they are too aggressive or distracted.”

Additionally, in Southern California, there have been at least 56 bicycling fatalities this year including 12 hit-and-run bicycle crashes, bikinginla.com reports.

On Friday, Sept. 14, Sarah Leaf, 29, of Corona del Mar, was riding on East Coast Highway when the driver of a stake-bed truck made a right turn onto Bayside Drive and ran over the cyclist about 10:35 a.m. The bicyclist and the truck were traveling in the same direction at the time of the crash. Leaf was pronounced dead at the scene of the bicycle accident. According to a report in Corona Del Mar Today, Leaf worked as a certified nutritionist at the Shape-Up Fitness & Spa.

The next day at 9:47 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, Catherine Ritz, 57, of Irvine was killed in a hit-and-run bicycle accident on Newport Coast Drive and Vista Ridge Road, according to the coroner report.

Paramedics responding to the scene of the bicycle accident transported Ritz to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, but she died at 1:40 p.m.

According to Patch.com, the driver of a large black pickup truck struck Ritz from behind as she was traveling northbound on Newport Coast Drive. The vehicle driven by the hit-and-run driver is likely to have significant damage to the front end and police believe the vehicle is a 2001 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma.

Under California law, drivers who are involved in a collision involving injuries are required to assist the victim and call 911 for help. Those who fail to render aid to a victim and flee the scene of a traffic accident are criminals under the law and will face criminal charges.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the fatal hit-and-run bicycle accident are asked to call Traffic Investigator Eric Little at 949-644-3746 or email at [email protected]

A third fatal bicycle accident took place at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday night in Buena Park at Artesia Boulevard just east of Stanton Avenue, the coroner reported.

The unidentified cyclist was a man who was struck by an automobile and died at the scene of the crash. No other details were reported at this time.
