Kyung Namgoong Killed in 91 Freeway Crash with Wrong-way Drunk Driver

Monday, January 30th, 2012

ANAHEIM, California – Despite several frantic calls to 911 altering police to a wrong-way driver in a blue Honda Civic on the State Route 91 freeway, Kyung Namgoong was killed and three others seriously injured as the suspected drunk driver collided with two vehicles early Sunday morning, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and news reports.
Police desperately tried to track down the car prior to the 1:47 a.m. crash, but were unable to find the vehicle in time. They caught up with the wrong-way driver after the crash and immediately arrested him on charges of driving under the influence. Ruben Gurrola, 23, of Pomona crashed into a white Toyota Camry in which Namgoong was a passenger and injured the 58-year-old man driving.
Police arrested Gurrola after conducting various tests on him following the accident, police said. Witnesses reported that Gurrola was driving on the wrong side of the 241 freeway prior to switching to the 91 freeway where the car accident took place just west of Coal Canyon.
Kyung Namgoong, 53, of Buena Park died a short time after the car crash about 3 a.m. at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. Three others Gurrola and his 24-year-old female passenger were transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange and Western Medical Center-Santa Ana with traumatic, non-life threatening injuries, police said in published reports.
In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.
“Sadly we get in our cars every day and never suspect we will be involved in a serious car crash,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Then one day it happens and most people want to know why. Typically car accidents are the cause of some sort of accidental human error, but too many times car accidents are the result of a driver’s recklessness.”
Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Seegmiller explains. The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol as it was in this case, whether they were distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.
“Families of victims killed in car accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller.

Holly Foor Struck and Killed in Head-On Crestline Car Accident

Monday, January 30th, 2012

CRESTLINE, California – Holly Foor, 42, of Crestline, was struck and killed in a head-on crash with another vehicle on State Route Highway 18 Friday night, according to a San Bernardino County Coroner report.

Foor was driving a 2005 Honda Civic northbound on Highway 18 between upper and lower Old Waterman Canyon Rd., at mile marker 11.9, the report stated.  Her car was struck by a southbound 1997 Ford Explorer after it veered over the double yellow line into northbound lanes and struck her head on.

Paramedics transported Foor to St. Bernardine Medical Center where she died a short time later at 6:48 p.m.  The San Bernardino Police Department is investigating the collision.

“Tragically every time we get in our cars any one of us is at risk of being involved in a car crash,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Most of the time some sort of human error is responsible for car accidents.  Sometimes errors are innocent and other times they are reckless.”

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Seegmiller explains. The investigation will seek to find out if either driver was under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

Crash with Tanker Truck on Wet Road Kills Teenager Amanda Jean Blessum

RAMONA, California —  A 19-year-old driver was killed Monday afternoon after her car hydroplaned in front of a propane tanker on the eastbound San Vincente Road, just west of Wildcat Canyon Road, according to police and coroner records.

Amanda Jean Blessum, 19, of Romona was driving in her 2009 Kia Spectra when she lost control of the vehicle and it spun out on slippery road and into the path of International Propane Co. truck, according to news reports. Blessum, who was traveling alone in the vehicle, died at the scene of the crash due to multiple blunt force injuries.

The driver of the truck was not hurt in the crash. Richard Leroy, 62, of Ramona, told authorities that he braked and tried to avoid the collision with the young woman.

Blessum , a recent graduate of Montecito High School’s Future Bound program in 2011, was reportedly not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Roads were closed for roughly two hours for cleanup and investigation by police.

SAN JACINTO, California —  A 24-year-old San Jacinto woman was ejected and killed in a head-on car accident with a sports utility vehicle on Wednesday in front of 19848 Gilman Springs Road, according to coroner and police reports. Six others including five children ages 11 to 15 years old sustained minor to moderate injuries in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

About 9:33 p.m., Shantae Cunningham, 24, was driving on Gilman Springs Road when she suddenly veered into oncoming traffic and into the path of a full-sized SUV driving in the opposite direction, police said. Cunningham was ejected in the crash, however, police said she was wearing her safety belt at the time of the accident.

The collision took place near Golden Era Productions studios on a winding two-lane roadway about two miles long that was recently being considered for realignment by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. The board voted earlier this month to put off a decision on realignment options indefinitely, according to news reports.

The roadway, which carries roughly 17,000 vehicles every day, has had a history of collisions due to his curves and city officials were considering widening it to four lanes as outlined in a county general plan.

“This type of collision is especially deadly for motorists because the two vehicles directly impact one another and the force of that impact can result in the most serious injuries or death,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm.

Fatal traffic accidents in California were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
