PALM SPRINGS, California (May 20, 2013) – Police are searching for the hit-and-run driver whose pickup truck struck and killed motorcyclist Eric Strzelczyk, 29, of Bermuda Dunes at the intersection of East Palm Canyon and Camino Real Palm Springs, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department.
About 4:30 a.m., police say the driver of a white Ford F-9 pickup truck was driving westbound on East Palm Canyon Drive prior to the crash. He hit Strzelczyk as he attempted to make a left-hand turn in front of the motorcycle rider who was traveling eastbound on El Palm Canyon, according to a report by MyDesert.com. The pickup truck driver fled the scene of the crash on foot without rendering aid to the motorcyclist as required under California law.
“The hit-and-run driver is now a felon and will face criminal charges when police find him,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “My condolences go out to the family of this young man who not only face the loss of their relative, but will not be able to find justice for his death until the suspect is caught.”
According to the news article in MyDesert.com, the motorcyclist was a former U.S. Air Force sergeant and an F-16 mechanic who grew up in Indio and graduated from Indio High School.
Palm Springs Police Department is investigating the fatal hit-and-run motorcycle accident. The suspect was wearing a red hat, white T-shirt and jeans at the time of the crash.
Victims of hit-and-run crashes who are injured or those who have lost a loved one in such an accident may obtain compensation if they are covered by uninsured motorist protection on their insurance policy. A wrongful death action can be filed on behalf of the victim’s relatives by a personal injury attorney.
