VISTA, California – A repeat drunk driver accused of killing a motorcyclist after he drove against traffic on the Interstate 15 freeway Saturday has been scheduled for arraignment in court on Wednesday, according to a Valley News article.

Brian Joseph Webb, 24, of Murrieta, who is accused of driving with a suspended driver’s license at the time of the crash, was arrested shortly after Saturday’s head-on collision on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit and run and drunk driving with a prior conviction.

The crash took place about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Webb was driving a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 truck when he allegedly entered the northbound I-15 freeway’s Del Lago off ramp from the wrong direction. Ryan Foster, 34, of Hesperia Killed in Bicycle Accident in Riverside

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

RIVERSIDE, California – Bicyclist Ryan D. Foster, 34, of Hesperia was killed Tuesday night when a 2002 Honda Accord traveling southbound on Escondido Avenue struck him as he was attempting to cross the street, according to a Riverside County Sheriff Coroner report.

San Bernardino Sheriff Department officers reported that Foster was crossing Escondido east to west just north of Hollister Street at the time of the bicycle accident about 10:19 p.m. He reportedly died at the scene from severe injuries sustained in the collision. Officers stationed at the police department’s Hesperia station are investigating the collision to determine its cause.

Riverside County Bicycle and Car Accident Statistics

Riverside County reported 203 fatal crashes including seven victims of bicycle accidents, according to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic Report. Additionally, the county reported 7,974 injuries including 343 sustained in bicycle crashes in 2009 collisions, the report said.

In California, fatal traffic accidents were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.

Police investigate every car accident involving a death to determine the cause of a crash, Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm explains. The investigation will seek to find out if any drivers involved were under the influence of alcohol, distracted or if there were any circumstances that may have led to the crash that were illegal or reckless.

“Families of victims killed in bicycle accidents not only have to cope with the loss of a loved one, but later their lives may be forever changed due to the loss of income and other costs,” said Seegmiller.

Postal Worker Diane Jansen Dies Days After Pit Bull Dog Bite Attack

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Source: San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and news reports

ESCONDIDO, California – Postal Carrier Diane Jansen was attacked and bitten on both of her legs by a loose pit bull dog on March 1 and just days later she died of a stroke at Palomar Medical Center on Sunday, according to a report by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Jansen, 59, died at 7:45 p.m. on March 4. The cause of death was listed as left basal ganglia hemorrhagic stroke due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, however, the report noted that dog bites on legs were a contributing condition.

The dog attack on March 1 took place just before 11 a.m. when Jansen was delivering mail to a home at the intersection of Carlann Lane and East Washington Avenue in Escondido.  The unleashed dog escaped through an open garage door where it had been with several children, but there were no adults present at the home. She was bitten on the legs by the dog and soon became unresponsive due to what doctors diagnosed later as an intracerebral hemorrhage. The owner’s requested that the dog be euthanized.

Dog Bite Statistics

In the United States, there are roughly 53 million dogs – that’s more dogs per capita than in any other country in the world. Indeed it’s no wonder that  more than 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year, and one out of five require some form of hospital treatment.

“Owners of vicious dogs are liable to their victims and the families of those killed by these animals,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “It’s not acceptable for dog owners to keep these animals unrestrained because they are a hazard not only to unsuspecting postal workers, but children and other residents.”

Roughly 334,000 people are admitted to US emergency departments every year with dog bite-associated injuries and another 466,000 are seen in other medical settings. Also, there is no way to track just how many people are bitten and have sustained minor injuries that went unreported to medical professionals.

In 2006 alone, over 31,000 victims of animal attacks required reconstructive surgery as a result of the most serious reported injuries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 50% of all dog bites were committed by Pit Bulls. Among the other aggressive breeds are German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Mastiff, Akita or Chow, Doberman Pinchers, and Bulldogs.
