Suspected DUI Driver Colin Powell Arrested After Crash into Backhoe on Potrero Road

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2013) –  Two passengers were killed, the suspected drunken driver and another passenger were injured late Monday night when the car they were traveling in crashed into construction equipment parked in front of a 60-acre private residence at 1601 Potrero Road near Newbury Park, according to a KABC News report.

Police arrested the driver Colin Powell, 23, of Newbury Park and he was was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and reports say that speed may also have been a factor in the crash. The Ventura Star reported the passengers who were killed were identified as Michael Hatcher, 26, of Newbury Park, and Aimee Hoff, 23, of Thousand Oaks.

About 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, police told reporters that paramedics rushed to the scene of the crash involving two men and two women on this two-lane roadway in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The vehicle had crashed into a backhoe and other construction equipment that was parked on the side of the narrow roadway in an upscale neighborhood known as Hidden Valley. Two of the passengers died  at the scene of the car accident, but the driver and a 21-year-old Newbury Park woman were transported by ambulance to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks with moderate injuries, the Ventura Star reported.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the car accident to determine if any other factors were involved in the crash. Although DUI charges have been filed against the driver, the report will likely look into whether the construction equipment was legally parked in a safe location and properly marked to alert drivers.
