WINCHESTER: Monica Rochin, 49, and Rosy Vargas, 35, Killed by Driver Allegedly Street Racing

Monday, July 8th, 2013

WINCHESTER, California (July 8, 2013) –  Two women were killed and four people suffered major injuries Sunday morning after a driver who was reportedly racing crashed into a car with five people at the intersection of Domenigoni Parkway and Leon Road, according to new reports and a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner Department.

Monica Rochin, 49, and Rosy Vargas, 35, both of Menifee were identified as the two female victims who were killed in the crash. The women were both riding in a 1994 Lexus ES300 along with a man and two girls and they were driving northbound on Leon Road. Rochin was a passenger and Vargas was the driver of the Lexus.

The women were killed when the driver of a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck reportedly lost control of the vehicle while racing with a third driver.

According to the Press Enterprise, the drivers of the pickup truck and a blue SUV were reportedly racing on Domenigoni Parkway prior to the crash. As the two vehicles approached the intersection with Leon Road they tried to avoid crashing into other vehicles stopped at the traffic light.  The pickup truck driver swerved into the slow lane and broadsided the Lexus on Leon Road.

The driver of the blue SUV veered into the fast lane and kept driving. Police are seeking help to find the person who was driving this vehicle believed to be a Ford Escape or similar SUV.

The collision between the Ford Ranger and the Lexus was a violent crash. The pickup truck driver allegedly drove on top of the Lexus and crushed its occupants. The impact caused the roof to peel off and both women were killed upon impact. The driver of the pickup truck was among the four people who suffered major injuries in the crash. One person was air-lifted to a nearby hospital and the other three were transported by ground ambulance.

The crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol’s Indio station. Police closed down the street for roughly three hours to gather evidence and

“As a father of five grown children myself I know how difficult this must be for the family of this young man,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “While the driver of either one of these vehicles could be held liable for the crash, there are other factors that could be involved including mechanical failure, poor maintenance, dangerous conditions in the roadway or defective manufacturing.
