LAGUNA NIGUEL, California (July 5, 2013) — Luzanna Malec, 58, of Laguna Niguel was killed and her husband critically injured in a pedestrian accident Thursday morning on Golden Lantern just north of Beacon Hill, according to a press release issued by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department and the Orange County Register.

About 9:09 a.m., Malec and her husband Tom Malec were walking on the sidewalk when a driver veered up onto the sidewalk and struck the pair as they were walking.  Paramedics responded to the crash, but unfortunately they were unable to save Luzanna who died at the scene. Tom was taken by ambulance to Mission Regional Hospital in Mission Viejo to be treated for undisclosed serious injuries.

Police typically investigate the circumstances surrounding fatal crashes to determine whether the driver was distracted or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said Attorney West Seegmiller.

“Sadly, there are no words that can comfort this woman’s family and friends as they cope with such an incredible loss,” Attorney West Seegmiller said.  “The thoughts and prayers of our staff are with them as they try to piece together what happened and come to terms with her death as well as be there to support her husband as he recovers.”
