UPLAND, California— A 13-year-old boy was killed and his mother injured Monday night by a hit-and-run driver on Campus Avenue at Arrow Highway, but police apprehended the man a short time after the crash at his home in Ontario, according to KTTV and KABC news reports.

Hit-and-run driver Kyle Bahensky, 21, of Ontario was traveling alone in a white pickup truck on Campus Avenue about 11 p.m. on Monday night when for unknown reasons he crashed into a small car driven by the boy’s mother. Bahensky’s truck then crashed into a light pole where it came to a stop. The mother was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The impact of the crash caused the small car to subsequently run into a nearby home where the carport roof crashed down onto the vehicle killinthe teenager upon impact. The boy was seated in the front passenger seat at the site of impact. The vehicle also caught on fire upon impact.

Police are expected to formally charge Bahensky with felony hit and run once he is released from hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries, the reports said.

“Drivers are required under California law to drive safely so they do not harm others on our busy roadways, but when their conduct falls below that standard of care they are negligent for the damages caused by their actions,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Families of victims killed in a traffic accident often find justice by filing a wrongful death action against a negligent driver.”
