LAKE FOREST, California – Steven David Muller, 29, of Lake Forest was killed Wednesday afternoon after the motorcyclist was struck by a car at Peachwood Street and Palmwood Drive, according to a press release by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department and news reports.
According to the Orange County Register, the driver of a 2010 Acura made a left-hand turn in front of the motorcyclist as he was driving his bike eastbound on Peachwood Drive. Other news reports indicated the motorcyclist was riding behind a pickup truck and the driver allegedly did not see him as he pulled out into the intersection.
Muller reportedly attempted to avoid the collision and applied his brakes, but the bike slide out from under him and into the left driver’s side of the car. Muller was then ejected into the roadway, the Register said. Police told reporters that the driver of the Acura was cooperative and as of press time had not been cited or arrested.
Emergency workers including Orange County firefighters treated the man at the scene and immediately transported him to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo where he later died shortly after the crash at 12:48 p.m.
The Lake Forest motorcycle crash is under investigation by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s major accident reconstruction team.
Liability Issues in Lake Forest Motorcycle Accidents
Under California law, drivers are expected to exercise a certain standard of care when they are on our roadways and when they fall below that standard they can be deemed negligent. Motorists who fail to yield the right of way to a motorcycle rider would be considered negligent under the law. However, if the motorist responsible for the crash ran a red light or a stop sign and struck the motorcyclist his actions would be deemed intentional as there exists a probability that injury to another could result from this action.
