Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

HEMET, California — Two women were killed after a driver attempted to evade police and struck a tree in Hemet on Tuesday, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

Crystal Gray, 33 a resident of Hemet and her passenger Shelby Kraft, 21 also a resident of Hemet who was seated in the rear of Gray’s sedan were both killed around 2:30 a.m. while traveling on Whittier Avenue east of State St. in Hemet.

A third woman, whose name has not been released was critically injured in the crash that caused the car to catch fire, the Press Enterprise reported.

Police officials are still investigating why the driver fled after an officer stopped the car because it matched a car that was used in four drive-by shootings, the report said.

The chase reached speeds of up to 100 mph but police tried to back off because the driver was passing through intersections too fast and the police wanted to be safe. They later found the car that had crashed into a tree on fire, the report said.

Seven Injured in Indio Rollover Crash on Interstate 10 Freeway

Monday, July 9th, 2012

INDIO, Calif. — Seven people suffered moderate to minor injuries after the sports utility vehicle they were riding in rolled over Sunday night in a crash on the Interstate 10 freeway, according to a CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire press release.

The accident happened at 6:21 p.m. on the eastbound Interstate 10 between Monroe and Jefferson streets, the report said. Victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their undisclosed injuries including one moderate injury and six minor injuries the, report said.

According to a 2006 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study more than 60 percent of SUV crash fatalities were the result of a rollover.

While manufacturers have since had to make serious improvements to their vehicles to ensure less risk of a rollover, many older vehicles are still at significant risk of rolling over while at high speeds, the NHTSA reported.

In the early 2000s, Ford and tire manufacturer Firestone, both faced legal problems after the tires were proven to be defective and result in a high rate of rollover crashes.

While SUVs have become safer to drive over the years, there is still a higher risk for them to rollover compared to a compact size car or sedan.

Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm said that often these rollover crashes can be the result of manufacturer defects or components on the car such as faulty tires can contribute to these accidents.

“While newer SUVs have become safer, owners of older model vehicles may be open to serious risks so it’s important that car buyers review a car’s safety history and make repairs as necessary,” Seegmiller said.

Additionally, an automobile repair shop can be liable for a car accidents if faulty repairs were the cause of a crash, Seegmiller said.

MURRIETA, California – A 16-year-old skateboarder suffered serious head injuries Friday after being struck by a driver on Jefferson Avenue at Nutmeg Street as the teenager was traveling through the intersection, according to a story reported in Southwest Riverside News Network.

Paramedics transported the injured teen to Inland Valley Medical Center for treatment of his injuries about 9 p.m., according to the article.

“Motorists should be on the alert to all types of pedestrians including skateboarders and bicyclists who generally have the right of way when crossing an intersection,” Attorney West Seegmiller said. “Drivers who do not yield the right of way may be liable for a victim’s medical care, pain and suffering and other losses.”

The skateboarder crash was reported within minutes of another pedestrian car accident that killed an elderly man on Kalmia Street and Jefferson Avenue. In that crash, the driver of a Mercedes sedan struck 77-year-old Norman J. Voorhees who died of his injuries at Inland Valley Medical Center. The driver and witnesses were questioned by police and later released.
