MORENO VALLEY, CA- Rosa Ramirez De Hernandez, 44, was killed Friday June 29 when her vehicle rolled-over onto the eastbound 60 freeway embankment east of Theodore Street. Ms. Hernandez was wearing her seat-belt and was not ejected from her vehicle. Presumably Ms. Hernandez was killed upon impact. The 5:27 a.m. crash took place near Gilman Springs Road.
According to Statistics, sports utility vehicles are about twice as likely as a passenger car to rollovers in a serious accident and occupants are more likely to be killed in these types of crashes. Furthermore, SUV’s often carry heavy cargo, making them even more at risk for a roll-over, (SUV’s include, trucks and minivans). There are 280,000 rollover accidents reported every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, claiming more than 10,000 lives annually.
Rollovers are caused by a vehicle having a higher center of gravity and narrow track width. In other words, the higher and narrower a vehicle is the more probability it has of rolling over. This is especially true when the vehicle is making a sharp turn or sudden change of direction. Unfortunately there are little federal rollover regulation standards, although pressure is building to require them.
Pressure to implement federal regulations for rollover-prone vehicles is mounting lately in the wake of lawsuits by victims of these types of crashes. For example, a California family sued Subaru in a products liability case. Lisa Ann Thayer was killed in a rollover of her Subaru Outback. Her family claimed that the vehicle failed to protect her in the crash and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the automaker and its distributors.
