SAN JACINTO, California —  A 24-year-old San Jacinto woman was ejected and killed in a head-on car accident with a sports utility vehicle on Wednesday in front of 19848 Gilman Springs Road, according to coroner and police reports. Six others including five children ages 11 to 15 years old sustained minor to moderate injuries in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

About 9:33 p.m., Shantae Cunningham, 24, was driving on Gilman Springs Road when she suddenly veered into oncoming traffic and into the path of a full-sized SUV driving in the opposite direction, police said. Cunningham was ejected in the crash, however, police said she was wearing her safety belt at the time of the accident.

The collision took place near Golden Era Productions studios on a winding two-lane roadway about two miles long that was recently being considered for realignment by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. The board voted earlier this month to put off a decision on realignment options indefinitely, according to news reports.

The roadway, which carries roughly 17,000 vehicles every day, has had a history of collisions due to his curves and city officials were considering widening it to four lanes as outlined in a county general plan.

“This type of collision is especially deadly for motorists because the two vehicles directly impact one another and the force of that impact can result in the most serious injuries or death,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm.

Fatal traffic accidents in California were down 12% to 2,715 deaths in 2010 compared to 3,090 killed in 2009, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, national statistics show that traffic fatalities have declined in recent years across the United States, down roughly 3% to 32,885 deaths in 2010 compared to 33,883 killed in 2009.
