Miguel Chavez Ceja, 75, of Santa Ana Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver

Friday, January 11th, 2013

SANTA ANA, California (Jan. 10, 2013) – Miguel Chavez Ceja, 75, of Santa Ana was killed Thursday morning when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking with a cane on Orange Avenue just south of Stanford Street, according to a press release issued by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department.

The Orange County Register reported that the Santa Ana Police Department are searching for the driver who is driving a dark, blue 1995 BMW 740 iL based on evidence gathered at the scene of the crime. The vehicle, which struck Ceja about 6:40 a.m., would likely have damage on the left front and side. The vehicle also was missing the driver’s side mirror.

Hit-and-Run Driver Sought After Girl, 7, Injured in Santa Ana Pedestrian Crash

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

SANTA ANA, California  –  Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and seriously injured a 7-year-old girl Tuesday night as she was walking with her mother in the 400 block of South Birch Street, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

About 5 p.m., police told the Register that the girl was walking on the sidewalk and suddenly darted into the street where she was struck by the driver of a dark-colored SUV who then dragged her roughly 45 feet, the Register said. Police believe the motorist was driving at about 30 mph at the time of the pedestrian accident.

Paramedics transported the injured child to a nearby hospital where she is being treated for head and body injuries, but was listed in stable condition. Orange County Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward for information about the hit-and-run driver that leads to his or her arrest. Surveillance video footage posted on the Register’s website shows the pedestrian accident.

“Motorists who fail to render aid to someone they injure in a crash are considered criminals under California law and are also liable for compensation to the victim for injuries and other losses resulting from an accident,” said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm. “Our office has handled similar cases where a victim was left injured due to a hit-and-run driver and the courts typically favor the victim under these circumstances.”

Anonymous information on crimes such as this one can be sent to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS, or 855-847-6227, or at www.occrimestoppers.org.

Leopoldo Aguirre Killed in Santa Ana Car Accident on Raitt Street

Monday, November 5th, 2012

SANTA ANA, California –  A man in his 50s was struck and killed by the driver of a blue Ford Taurus sedan Sunday night as he walked in the 700 block of South Raitt Street, according to an article in the Orange County Register. The man was identified today as Leopoldo Aguirre.

According to the report, the man was walking about 6:20 p.m. when he was struck by the vehicle and critically injured. Paramedics responding to the crash scene transported the injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later died of his injuries, the report said.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash and police determined that alcohol was not likely a factor in the pedestrian accident. However, the investigation will continue by police and the family of the victim may also consider hiring a personal injury attorney to conduct their own inquiry into the crash to determine fault, said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of the Seegmiller Law Firm.

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of this man who at this time are coping with a tremendous loss,” Seegmiller said. “Car accidents are life-altering events for victims and their families and if someone else is deemed to be at fault for a crash they should want to help the other recoup their financial losses.”

SANTA ANA, California — Daniel Rubio, 19, of Orange was killed Thursday night after being struck by the driver of a pickup truck in the 2100 block of West 17th Street, according to a press release issued by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department.

About 9:34 p.m. on Oct. 4, Rubio was walking across the Santa Ana River Bridge on 17th Street when for unknown reasons he was hit by the driver who has not been identified, but who police say stayed with the young man.

Police responding to the scene of the crash pronounced Rubio dead at the scene.

According to a report in the Orange County Register the teenager was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, but it was not clear if that had anything to do with why he was struck by the vehicle.

There were 41 pedestrians who died in Orange County in 20109 and 864 were injured. In California, there were 598 pedestrians killed and 12,418 injured in 2009, according to the CHP traffic report.

National data compiled by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Authority shows that pedestrian injuries and fatalities in the United States were up 4.9% in 2010 to 4,280 deaths and injuries were up 19% in 2010 to 70,000 people injured.

California Pedestrian Law

(b) This section does not relieve a pedestrian from the duty of using due care for his or her safety. No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.

(c) The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.

(d) Subdivision (b) does not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”
