SAN DIEGO, California (June 6, 2013) – Eric Klyaz, 10, and his 9-year-old friend, were playing with a handgun at the home of Todd and Susan Francis at a condominium complex at the 10900 block of Ivy Hill Drive in Scripps Ranch. A resident heard a shot fired just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and went to the residence to find Klyaz lying in a fetal position with a gunshot wound to the chest. Medics took Klyaz to Rady Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Todd Francis, the possible owner of the handgun, is the brother of former San Diego mayoral candidate Steve Francis of Rancho Santa Fe.

“Why this gun was not secured in a child-proof safe is what everybody wants to know,” states West Seegmiller, owner of The Seegmiller Law Firm in San Diego.
