WESTMINSTER, California (April 18, 2013) — Shawn Keith, 34, of Westminster was killed Wednesday night when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck while walking in the 14100 block of Springdale Street, according to a press release issued by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department.

About 8:30 p.m., paramedics and police were called to the scene of the pedestrian accident and quickly transported Keith to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he was treated for major injuries sustained in the crash. Keith died of his injuries at the hospital about 10:55 p.m. the same night, the report said.

“Drivers who leave the scene of an injury accident are not only cowards, but criminals under California law,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Our prayers go out to the family of this man.”

Police are searching for the driver who fled the scene of the Westminster pedestrian accident. The families of pedestrians who are killed by hit-and-run drivers may not realize that they may be covered by their own vehicle’s insurance if they have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage on their policy, Seegmiller said.

“A personal injury attorney can evaluate whether the family has a claim to compensation for their losses such as funeral expenses, medical costs and other expenses,” Seegmiller explains.
