MENIFEE, California — Steven Nunez, 17, of Corona was killed Friday night after a motorist struck him as he was walking on Domenigoni Parkway near Laguna Vista Drive, according to a report by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Nunez was transported by paramedics to the emergency room at Menifee Valley Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
According to the police report, Nunez was walking east in the No. 2 lane facing westbound traffic on Domenigoni Parkway. A 30-year-old driver tried to avoid hitting the teenager and performed evasive maneuvers, but was not able to avoid the pedestrian crash.
About 11:10 p.m., Menifee Police officers arrived at the scene of the pedestrian accident and found Nunez was not responsive.
Traffic on the roadway was closed until 5 a.m. on Saturday morning as police conducted an investigation.

National data compiled by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Authority shows that pedestrian injuries and fatalities in the United States were up 4.9% in 2010 to 4,280 deaths and injuries were up 19% in 2010 to 70,000 people injured.
