RIVERSIDE, California – A toddler was badly burned on her lower body Thursday morning after coming into contact with a smoldering fire pit at Rancho Jurupa Park at 4800 Crestmore Road, according to a CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department press release.

The incident took place about 11:46 a.m. Paramedics transported the girl by ground ambulance to a Regional Burn Center for treatment of minor to moderate burns on her lower extremity, according to the report.

It’s important if you are burned to seek treatment immediately. This can be simple in cases where a victim incurs a minor surface burn. In that case, ointments available in standard First Aid kits may be used to help alleviate pain and promote healing. Treatment will likely require a doctor to apply dressings on the wound, restore fluids to patients, provide antibiotics and in some cases administer skin grafting. Doctors may treat wounds by removing dead tissue or debridement.

The more severe the burn, the more apt the victim will be susceptible to complications including infection, electrolyte imbalance, respiratory distress, shock, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. However, moderate burns may need to be treated by a doctor and severe burns will require emergency treatment and specialized care from burn centers.

The prognosis of a burn patient is dependent on a number of factors. How severe the burn is, its location and how quickly and how well it is treated. Many who suffer from burns may have some sort of scarring ranging from minor marks to disfigurement or disabling injuries.
